Government Chief Data Steward (GCDS)
This role supports the use of data as a resource across government to help deliver better services to New Zealanders. It’s held by the Chief Executive of Stats NZ Liz MacPherson.
What the GCDS does
The GCDS is the government functional lead for data. Functional leads are charged with developing and improving a designated area across government.
The roles are delegated to specific CEs by the State Services Commissioner.
Growing data capability across government
The GCDS works across government and is responsible for:
- the development of policy, infrastructure, strategy and planning
- building capability
- the use of data across government.
As the functional lead for data, Stats NZ's role is to facilitate. They are taking a collaborative approach to partner with government agencies to co-design and implement new ways of managing data.
