The NZ government’s digital initiatives that have been completed or implemented, are being developed, or are about to start.

The digital projects are grouped under areas that relate to one of the proposed themes in the discussion Towards a Digital Strategy for Aotearoa:

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Emloyment (MBIE) is leading scoping work on the future of connectivity in New Zealand. This includes current connectivity issues, trends and needs (such as network coverage, performance, resilience and new technologies) with a view to establishing a more strategic approach that can guide future government telecommunications priorities and investments.

Digital skills training for individuals and whānau

DIA invested $10 million in digital skills training for individuals and whānau, delivered through the Manaiakalani Education Trust and funded from the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund (CRRF).

Equitable Digital Access

In 2020, the Ministry of Education (MoE) invested $47.7 million to ensure students could continue to learn from home during COVID-19 lockdowns. This provided around 49,000 learning devices to schools/kura and 45,000 internet connections to unconnected households with students.

MoE has also been involved in a number of pilots aimed at giving more students access to the internet at home.

In 2020, Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) funded education providers around $4.2 million for delivery of foundation level information technology courses that contribute to improved digital literacy.
