The Service Innovation Lab has gone from a good idea to a very active and well-functioning All of Government entity in the space of 18 months.

Helping those that need help the most
We too were a small band of merry misfits, tasked with expanding the service offering of the cross-agency juggernaut/success story that is SmartStart as part of a design sprint.
Our team involved members from Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and Inland Revenue (IR). We were guided along the sprint process by Creative HQ, who persevered with us while we struggled with defining problems, creating solutions, and generally pushing boundaries!

We’ve just completed the ‘alpha’ phase of the project to redevelop newzealand.govt.nz by creating a prototype website. Prototyping is a method used to get feedback from users about future designs. On 6 April 2018, we had the privilege of having Matti Schneider, visiting New Zealand from France, provide an impromptu presentation at the Service Innovation Lab about his experience in running the French Government State Incubator, beta.gouv.fr. This included examples of State Startups such as the open data portal and social network, data.gouv.fr, and OpenFisca, a benefits and taxation modelling tool we are now exploring for use in New Zealand.

Colin MacDonald is the Government Chief Information Officer (GCIO) and is tasked with delivering the Government ICT Strategy and Action Plan, which was approved last June by Cabinet.
