New organisations and business units domain names
You may need a new .govt.nz domain for a new government entity, such as when government agencies merge or new agencies and business units are created.
Contact us as early as possible if you're in the process of developing a new government project or initiative, or a new agency or business unit.
We'll talk with you about:
- whether your request meets the eligibility criteria for a .govt.nz or .parliament.nz 3rd level domain name
- whether a 4th level domain name would better meet your needs
- the suitability of potential names, with a focus on balancing your needs and the needs of your users.
Choosing a domain name
Choose a domain name that reflects the official name of the new entity (in full or by acronym) and that avoids confusion with other government agencies.
Examples of good agency domain names:
- education.govt.nz
- mpi.govt.nz
- corrections.govt.nz
- ero.govt.nz.
Talk with the relevant people in your organisation, for example the communications team, about what the entity will be commonly known as.
Will the media refer to the entity by its acronym or an abbreviation of its name? Pick a name that is close to what the entity will be commonly known as, to avoid confusion.
