The Government ICT Strategy is the New Zealand Government’s foundation for digital change. It supports better public services and agency digital transformation, and puts citizens and businesses at the centre of digital services.
We'll be revisiting the strategy in 2018 to ensure it takes a truly digital approach and positions the New Zealand Government well for the future.
5 key outcomes
The strategy sets 5 outcomes for NZ digital government:
- Customers experience seamless, integrated and trusted public services.
- Information-driven insights are reshaping services and policies, and adding public and private value.
- Adoption of information and technology innovations is accelerated and value is being created.
- Investment in innovative digital services is being prioritised and benefits are being realised.
- Complex problems are being solved and innovative solutions are being adopted.
How we get there is driven by the opportunities we take and where we focus our effort.
4 areas of opportunity
The strategy defines 4 high-level areas where we can create long-lasting change.
1 — exploit emerging technologies
We can encourage agencies to adopt new, beneficial technology. Cloud services is a particular technology that can improve the way the public sector operates.
In 2012, Cabinet directed agencies to adopt cloud services over traditional IT systems. Cloud services are more cost effective, agile and secure, and encourage cross-agency collaboration and mobility.
2 — unlock the value of information
By making government-held information more available, we can increase public trust and encourage willingness to share and reuse data. Data analytics and predictive modelling can use data to solve complex problems and generate innovative ideas.
3 — leverage agency transformations
We can influence agency transformation programmes to include digital initiatives that integrate services across multiple agencies and their delivery partners. This will deliver system-wide benefits for the public sector.
4 — partner with the private sector
Partnerships with the private sector can drive innovation and encourage greater risk-taking.
