Overview of the Digitising Government Programme
The DGP seeks to implement a more centralised and coordinated approach to government digital investment, procurement and delivery. This will reduce costs and improve digital services for New Zealanders.
Why government digital delivery needs to change
The cost of NZ government digital initiatives continues to rise alongside expectations that government needs to deliver better, unified, technology-enabled services.
New Zealand is not unique in facing these challenges and we’re learning from the experiences of other countries.
It’s clear that the NZ government needs to take a more central approach that prioritises efficiency and a strong service delivery mindset.
The Digitising Government Programme: a new direction
In response to these challenges, the Government Chief Digital Officer (GCDO) and Public Service Commission (PSC) are undertaking a significant shift in direction and accountabilities.
This involves a phased, pragmatic and collaborative approach across the public sector to:
- drive down the cost of digital expenditure
- centralise procurement
- provide better joined-up digital services.
This shift will be delivered through a GCDO‑owned and managed ‘Digitising Government Programme’ (DGP).
The GCDO will develop and maintain a rolling 5‑year digital government target state, supported by a 3‑year programme with deliverables and targets.
