API Standard

The Application Programming Interface (API) Standard establishes requirements and recommendations for how government agencies design, develop, secure, deploy and operate APIs.

Purpose

The API Standard is the Government Chief Digital Officer’s directive for the design and management of APIs within the government context.

It provides a consistent, interoperable technical foundation for data sharing and transacting across organisations — enabling joined-up services, shared platforms, the Government App, and trusted third-party interaction with government services.

The API standard is mandatory for digital services that are included in the Digital Government Target State.

From , the API standard is mandatory for:

  • all new APIs
  • APIs that are in the design phase.

For projects that are already in progress, APIs will have a 3-month period to align.
