4. Next steps — Accessible digital government services for New Zealand

This section of the report discusses the next steps planned for the Digital Service Design Standard (DSDS) and the Digital Accessibility Standard (DAS).

DSDS

A full draft of the updated Standard will be published online for consultation in early 2026. Feedback from consultation will be incorporated before approval to publish the final standard by the Government Chief Digital Officer (GCDO) in mid-2026.

This will be followed by supporting resources, monitoring, and enforcement to embed the standard across the public sector through All-of-Government processes.

DAS

The next steps for the DAS are to create the standard and the programme of support around it.

The DAS will be created with stakeholder input from:

  • a reference group made up of disability, government and supplier representatives
  • online consultation
  • workshops with select stakeholder groups.

The programme of support is not yet final. It will include a range of activities that reflect the recommendations in this report such as:

  • training for leaders and practitioners by disabled people
  • writing the business case for accessibility and other stories explaining why it is essential
  • various tools and guidance to support agencies and suppliers to understand and meet the DAS
  • supporting and collaborating on cross-agency activities.
